Lake Macquarie: Nature’s Biggest Stage

When you join a Showtime Kayaking tour, you’re not just paddling a kayak. You’re stepping onto nature’s stage — where the lake, the stars, and the wildlife all play their part.

Lake Macquarie is Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake. Bigger than Sydney Harbour. Wide open spaces, secret bays, winding creeks, and sandy islands — it’s an explorer’s dream.

What Makes It Special

A Living Aquarium
Below the surface, seagrass meadows sway like velvet curtains. Tiny fish dart, seahorses cling to stems, and nudibranchs (the technicolour “costume designers” of the sea) add bursts of colour.

Shaped by the Sea
Lake Macquarie is what geologists call a drowned-valley estuary. Thousands of years ago the ocean slowly filled a river valley, creating the vast waterway we paddle today. This mix of tidal flows and freshwater runoff makes the lake a hotspot for biodiversity — home to mangroves, saltmarsh, seagrass, and a cast of marine life. Think of it as nature’s amphitheatre!

Feathered VIPs
Elizabeth Island, one of our favourite tour spots, is now a summer home to the endangered little tern. These delicate birds migrate thousands of kilometres before nesting right here. Thanks to recent restoration work, more than 50 adults and up to 30 chicks now call Elizabeth Island home. Please help us keep their stage safe — admire them from a respectful distance.

Cultural Connections
This is Awabakal Country, meaning “people of the calm surface”. The Awabakal people have cared for this land and water for generations. Their stories, sacred sites, and deep connection to the lake add a richness to every paddle.

A Lake in Good Hands

Lake Macquarie City Council runs programs to keep the lake healthy — water-quality monitoring, bush regeneration, and Landcare projects. Thanks to these efforts, the show can go on for generations to come.

This is also what makes the area perfect for ecotourism. Visitors aren’t just enjoying the lake —   they’re experiencing a destination where conservation, culture, and community care take centre stage. Every paddle supports a broader story of protecting waterways and celebrating natural heritage.

Every Paddle Tells a Story

Every Showtime Kayaking tour is part adventure, part discovery. One moment you’re gliding silently under starlight, the next you’re spotting stingrays or watching a pied cormorant dive for a fish.

This is ecotourism at its most exciting — low-impact adventures that let families, friends, and couples connect with nature while helping protect it.
